Marketing Contacts determine how many people you can include when sending mass emails or texts. Your plan sets a base limit, and the system checks your available Marketing Contacts whenever you send a mass communication to make sure you are within that limit.
What Is a Marketing Contact?
A Marketing Contact is any contact placed in a contact list or other sendable contact group who is sent a mass communication, such as a mass email or mass text.
Contacts that are not part of a contact list or other sendable group can still receive one-off, individual emails without counting as Marketing Contacts.
A contact can belong to multiple contact lists or sendable groups but only counts once toward your Marketing Contact total.
How Marketing Contact Validation Works
When you send a mass communication to a contact list or another sendable contact group - for example, a segment built from Sign Up Form submissions - the system checks your available Marketing Contacts during the send preview step, before the send goes out.
If the number of contacts included in the send would put you over your Marketing Contact limit, you will need to increase your limit before the send can be completed.

Key Notes
Marketing Contact validation applies to any mass send, including sends to contact lists and other sendable contact groups such as Sign Up Form segments.
Email sending volume is limited to roughly 10 times your Marketing Contact count per month, depending on your account's email reputation.
Removing a contact from all contact lists and sendable groups frees up Marketing Contact capacity without deleting the contact record itself.
FAQ
Are there contact limits?
Marketing Contacts are limited by your plan. Contacts that aren't on a contact list or other sendable group are considered CRM Contacts, which are not limited, within fair use.
Does importing contacts use up my Marketing Contacts?
No. Importing contacts alone does not count against your Marketing Contact limit. A contact only counts once it is placed on a contact list or another sendable group.
If a contact is on more than one list, does it count twice?
No. Each contact counts once toward your Marketing Contact total, regardless of how many lists or sendable groups it belongs to.
