A merge tag is a placeholder like %FIRST_NAME% that VipeCloud replaces with real information when an email or text sends. If there's no information for a tag, it displays blank.
How to Insert a Merge Tag
Open the email or text editor.
Place your cursor where the tag should go.
Click the Insert Merge Tag button in the editor toolbar.
Click a section to expand it, such as Standard Fields or Your Information.
Click the tag to insert it at your cursor.
You can also type a tag by hand. Type it exactly as listed, including the percent signs and underscores.
Contact Field Merge Tags
Contact field tags are replaced with the recipient's own information.
Standard Fields - VipeCloud's built-in contact fields. Each tag is the field name in capitals with underscores, such as %FIRST_NAME% or %EMAIL%.
Custom Fields - the contact fields your account created. Each tag starts with CUSTOM:, followed by the field name in capitals with spaces changed to underscores. A field named Investment Level becomes %CUSTOM:INVESTMENT_LEVEL%.
The Standard Fields and Custom Fields sections of the Insert Merge Tag pop-up list every tag available in your account.

Key Notes
A tag with no matching information displays blank, so check that your contacts have a value before relying on a tag in a greeting.
Tags are case sensitive and must keep their percent signs and underscores. A mistyped tag sends as plain text.
Social posts have their own set of merge tags in the Insert Social Merge Tag pop-up.
Landing pages use different merge tags. See What Are Landing Page Merge Tags?.
