How to Create and Manage MCP Server API Keys

How to generate, manage, and securely store API keys for the VipeCloud MCP Server.

Written by VipeCloud Support

The MCP Server page is where you create and manage the API keys that connect AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT to your VipeCloud account. This article covers how to generate a key, what to do with it right away, and how to manage keys you have already created.

How to Generate an API Key

  1. Click Vipe AI in the left sidebar.

  2. Click MCP Server under Agents.

  3. Click Create API Key.

  4. (Optional) Enter a Label to identify which tool the key is for, such as "Claude Desktop" or "ChatGPT".

  5. Click Generate Key.

  6. Copy the key immediately. Keep the window open while you paste the key into your AI tool's MCP configuration, then close it once the key is saved there.

Key Notes

  • API keys are shown in full only once, at the moment they are generated. Once the dialog is closed, the key cannot be viewed again.

  • If you lose a key before saving it somewhere, it cannot be recovered. Delete the unused key from the AI Agent API Keys table and generate a new one.

  • Each key appears afterward in the AI Agent API Keys table in a masked format (for example, vc_mcp_****12345), for reference only.

How to Manage Existing Keys

Every key you create is listed in the AI Agent API Keys table on the MCP Server page.

Each row has three actions:

  • Edit Label - rename the key without changing the key itself.

  • Deactivate - turns the key off without deleting it, blocking it from being used until you reactivate it. Click the same icon again to reactivate.

  • Delete - permanently removes the key. Once deleted, it can no longer be used and cannot be recovered.

Best Practices for Storing API Keys

  • Paste the key directly into your AI tool's secure MCP or connector settings. Never paste it into chat messages, plain text files, spreadsheets, or code repositories.

  • If you need to reuse the same key across setups, store a copy in a password manager rather than an unencrypted note.

  • Use a descriptive Label for each key so you can tell which tool or use case it belongs to later.

  • If a key is ever exposed or no longer needed, deactivate or delete it from the AI Agent API Keys table.
