Facebook Lead Ads Overview

How to connect Facebook Lead Ads to VipeCloud, create a lead form in Facebook, map its questions and the ad's campaign and UTM info to contact fields, run automations with conditions, test the integration, and read the stat cards.

Written by VipeCloud Support

Facebook Lead Ads connects the lead forms on your Facebook ads to VipeCloud. Each time someone submits one of your lead forms, VipeCloud creates or updates a contact with their answers and can run automations on that contact.

How to Connect Facebook to the VipeCloud Lead Ads App

  1. In the left sidebar, click Lead Capture.

  2. Select Facebook Lead Ads.

  3. Click Connect the VipeCloud Lead Ads app.

  4. Log in to Facebook, or click Continue as [your name] if you are already logged in.

  5. When Facebook asks which Pages to share, select Opt in to all current and future Pages.

  6. On the next screen, select Opt in to all current and future Businesses.

  7. Continue through the remaining Facebook screens until you return to VipeCloud.

  8. In the panel that opens on the right, select the Pages you want VipeCloud to receive leads from.

  9. Click OK.

Opting in to all current and future Pages and Businesses means a Page you add to Facebook later works without reconnecting. In the VipeCloud panel, you only need to select the Pages you want leads from now. To add Pages later, click reauthorize on the Facebook Lead Ads page.

How to Create a Lead Form in Facebook

This section covers only the campaign settings VipeCloud needs to receive your leads. For campaign strategy, consult a digital ads specialist.

Start a Leads Campaign

  1. On the Facebook Lead Ads page, click Ads Manager.

  2. In Facebook Campaigns, click + Create.

  3. Select Leads, then click Continue.

  4. Select Manual Leads Campaign, then click Continue.

  5. Enter a name for your campaign.

Set Up the Ad Set

  1. Enter a name for your ad set.

  2. Select Instant Forms.

  3. Choose the Facebook Page that will run the ad. It must be a Page, not a personal profile.

Build the Instant Form

The form's questions are the information VipeCloud adds to each contact, so add a question for everything you want to collect.

  1. Click Create form, or select a form you made for an earlier campaign.

  2. Name the form and choose a form type. If you're unsure, choose More volume.

  3. Add a headline, description, and background image if you want them, then click Next.

  4. Review the questions. Facebook includes email and full name by default.

  5. To collect anything else, such as a phone number, click Add Category.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Enter the link to your company's privacy policy, then click Next.

  8. Set the call to action, such as visiting your website, calling you, or downloading a file.

  9. Click Create form.

  10. Click Close without publishing the ad.

Facebook requires a privacy policy for lead ads. If you don't have one, follow How To Create A Privacy Policy/Cookie Policy If You Have A Website or How To Create A Privacy Policy If You Don't Have A Website.

We recommend mapping and testing the form in VipeCloud before you publish the ad, so the first real leads arrive with their answers in the right fields.

How to Map Lead Form Fields to Contact Fields

Your Facebook forms are listed on the Lead Forms tab of the Facebook Lead Ads page, each with its status and Page. If a form is missing, click Edit Connected Pages to check that its Page is connected.

  1. On the Facebook Lead Ads page, open the Lead Forms tab.

  2. Next to the form, click Create Field Mapping. If the form is already mapped, the button reads Edit Field Mapping.

  3. In the Question Mapping card, choose the VipeCloud field for each question.

    • Leave As Form Field - the answer stays with the lead and is not written to a contact field.

    • A contact field - the answer is written to that field on the contact. Map a phone number question to Mobile Phone if you plan to text these leads.

  4. For each mapped question, choose how a repeat submission from the same person is saved.

    • Replace (Recommended) - overwrites the existing value with the new answer. Use this for most fields.

    • Add to - adds the new answer after the existing value. Use this for notes-type fields, such as a question about the lead's goals.

  5. To set the same value on every lead from this form, click Add Mapping in the Other Mapping card. For example, set a Lead Source custom field to FB Lead Ads.

  6. To add every lead to a contact list, click Add Action in the Actions card and select Add To Contact List.

  7. Click Save Mapping.

How to Map Campaign and UTM Info to Contact Fields

Each lead from an ad also carries the campaign, ad set, and ad it came through, the platform, and UTM values. The UTM values come from the URL parameters you set on the ad in Ads Manager, because lead forms are submitted inside Facebook rather than on your website.

  1. In Facebook Ads Manager, open the ad that uses your lead form.

  2. In the URL parameters field, enter your UTM tags, for example utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}.

  3. Click Publish.

  4. To store UTM values in their own fields, create a text custom field in VipeCloud for each one.

  5. Open the form's field mapping page and scroll to the Ad & Campaign Info card.

  6. For each value you want on the contact, select a field under Standard Contact Fields or Custom Contact Fields.

  7. Choose Replace (Recommended) or Add to for each mapped value.

  8. Click Save Mapping.

Ad & Campaign Info fields:

  • Campaign Name, Campaign ID, Ad Set Name, Ad Set ID, Ad Name, Ad ID - the ad the lead came through.

  • Platform - Facebook or Instagram.

  • UTM Source, UTM Medium, UTM Campaign, UTM Term, UTM Content - the matching utm_ values from the ad's URL parameters. Other URL parameters are not saved.

VipeCloud fills in Facebook's dynamic parameters {{campaign.name}}, {{campaign.id}}, {{adset.name}}, {{adset.id}}, {{ad.name}}, {{ad.id}}, and {{site_source_name}}, which becomes fb or ig. Other dynamic parameters, such as {{placement}}, are removed from the value.

Values left as form fields appear under Other Form Fields when you click Lead Data next to a lead on the Leads tab. Leads from the Lead Ads Testing tool and from organic posts have no ad, so only Platform is filled in for them. If the Facebook account connected to VipeCloud can't access the ad account that runs the ad, the campaign, ad, and UTM values may be missing.

How to Run Automations When a Lead Comes In

The Automations card on a form's field mapping page runs automations on each contact created or updated from that form.

  1. On the form's field mapping page, click Add Automation in the Automations card.

  2. Choose the automation action and its settings.

  3. Click Save Automation.

Each automation runs once per contact. If the same person submits the form again, the automation does not run a second time. You can also add leads to a contact list in the Actions card and trigger an automation from that list. See Automations Overview.

How to Add Conditions to a Lead Form Automation

Conditions make an automation run only for leads whose form answers match the rules you set. For example, you can send a different series to leads who answer one question differently. Conditions are available on Enterprise plans.

  1. In the Automations card, click Conditions on the automation.

  2. In the Automation Conditions panel, click add condition.

  3. Choose a form question or an Ad & Campaign Info field, such as UTM Source, and the value the lead must have.

  4. Click Save.

The Conditions button shows how many conditions an automation has, for example Conditions (2). Ad & Campaign Info fields work in conditions whether or not they're mapped to a contact field.

How to Test the Integration

Automations on the form run when you submit a test lead. Use contact details that can receive the emails or texts those automations send.

  1. On the Facebook Lead Ads page, click Lead Ads Testing to open Facebook's testing tool.

  2. Select the Page and the form in the dropdowns.

  3. Click Preview Form.

  4. Fill in the answers you want to submit, then click Continue.

  5. Click Create Lead.

  6. In VipeCloud, open the Leads tab on the Facebook Lead Ads page.

The test lead appears at the top of the Leads tab.

How to View Facebook Lead Ads Results

Once Facebook is connected, four stat cards appear at the top of the Facebook Lead Ads page. They count the lead forms and leads connected to your own user.

  • Lead Forms - the number of connected lead forms.

  • Contacts Created - the number of contacts created from your lead forms, all time.

  • After Hours Leads - the percentage of created contacts that came in outside 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, in your time zone.

  • Booked a Meeting - the number of created contacts who booked a meeting on one of your schedulers, and that number as a percentage of contacts created since your first scheduler.

The Leads tab lists every lead that comes in from your ads, newest first.

Key Notes

  • Leads only come in from Facebook Pages selected in VipeCloud. Use Edit Connected Pages to change them.

  • If a lead's email matches an existing contact, VipeCloud updates that contact using each question's Replace or Add to setting.

  • Each automation runs once per contact, even if the person submits the form again.

  • Automation conditions require an Enterprise plan.

  • Some accounts do not show the Other Mapping card.
